Active Stabilization for Imaging Devices
Abstract
Earth’s characteristics and atmospheric conditions can be studied through imaging devices onboard high-altitude balloons. During the ascent, payloads are prone to movements that can reduce the clarity of images. Active stabilization technology mitigates these effects and aids in producing quality images for analysis on the ground. The Phoenix College ASCEND team sought out a way to combat the effects of rotation, and found a solution using a microcontroller-powered system designed to counteract movements. The results from implementation demonstrate a working model that can serve as a guide for teams seeking to negate the effects of spinning during a launch.
