Optimizing Ubiquity, Iridium Cutdown, and RFD 900 for High-Altitude Balloon Solar Eclipse Missions.
Abstract
Success of high-altitude balloon missions relies on optimizing communication and ground systems and maintaining consistent contact with ground stations. Our recent launches during solar eclipses have highlighted the necessity for enhanced communication strategies. The utilization of Ubiquity, RFD systems along with our cutdown systems has revealed areas for improvement. We experienced notable challenges with the countdown and streaming capabilities due to the inflexibility of hardware and software configurations, which impeded adaptability and performance. To address these issues, we propose a refined approach that includes the optimization of the Ubiquity and RFD systems for increased reliability and a more efficient cutdown mechanism. This would involve using software-encoded and hardware-encoded redundancies, ensuring mission integrity even under adverse conditions.
