Abstract

An academic HAB (High Altitude Balloon) team experiences some level of oversight from their academic institution in a way that amateur HAB groups do not. Academic HAB teams may also experience periods of high turnover rate for its members, which risks leaving teams without enough experience. Consistent quality record keeping and descriptions of processes allow for easy transparency for those overseeing an academic HAB team. This record keeping and documentation of processes, in addition to training and simulations can combat the risks caused by a high turnover rate. This paper will outline how the implementation of NASA-like processes, documentation standards, and training can help academic HAB teams in their oversight as well as protect against experience and information loss due to member turnover.
