Abstract

We will report on our efforts in the Natural Resource Ecology and Management (NREM) Department to advance community dialog on issues of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, through a discipline-specific lens. We have developed two primary engagement strategies that seek to elevate the profile of these topics and advance departmental conversations: a weekly newsletter called “The Diversity Drop” and a semester-long common read program. The “The Diversity Drop” introduces students, staff, and faculty in the department to important topics in the discipline in short, easily interpretable emails. The Common Read initiative focuses on books that explore the intersection of environmental stewardship and diversity, equity, or inclusion. Branded as “NREM Reads”, it includes a graduate-level seminar, free book distribution for students, discussion groups, and an array of student- or faculty-led engagement activities focusing on topics covered in the book. In this presentation, we will share our experiences and lessons-learned from these strategies to highlight their value in advancing our committees’ efforts to enhance discipline-specific engagement in DEI.
