Celebrating the Life of Frederick D. Patterson
- Brad Kuennen (Iowa State University)
Abstract
Frederick Douglass Patterson became the fourth black graduate from Iowa State's College of Veterinary Medicine when he received his degree in 1923. He would go on to have one of the most distinguished careers of any graduate from Iowa State University, establishing organizations that continue to impact the lives of thousands of students in the United States to this day, yet his work is little known on our campus. This program will explore the life and career of Frederick Douglass Patterson, from his time as a student here at Iowa State University, to his tenure as President of Tuskegee University, and his leadership in the founding of the UNCF (United Negro College Fund). Finally, the presentation will touch briefly on his many recognitions, including the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom, and describe recent efforts by the ISU College of Veterinary Medicine to celebrate and honor his legacy.
