Transracial International Adoptees Loss of Cultural Identity
- Sarah D. Frette (Iowa State University)
Abstract
This session features a panel of transracial international adoptees (TRIAs) exploring their loss of cultural and/or ethnic identity and how societal norms and expectations have presented challenges to their perceived identity. Transracial international adoption is where a child is adopted by a family from a different race and culture and placed in the adoptive parent or parents’ country. It is commonly referred to as intercountry or transnational adoption.
One panelist will tell their adoption journey and their loss of culture and/or ethnic identity. Another panelist, an adoptive parent, will share their adoption journey from the perception of the adoptive parent. The panelists will engage in a Q&A with the moderator and audience. By the end of the session, the panelist’s hope is to increase awareness around TRIAs’ experience with culture loss.
