Communities and Climate: How Urban Planners Can Create Inclusive Environments
- Ryan Engstler (Iowa State University)
Abstract
What kills more people yearly than bees, sharks, and natural disasters? Cars. America's car centric design is an unhealthy obsession. 6 million annual crashes and 38,000 deaths are only the beginning of many injustices. The automobile has reallocated resources unequally. Additionally, carbon emissions and pollution are disproportionally placed upon communities of color. This session will provide an introduction on how inclusive design can create walkable, green, and affordable urban centers for today and tomorrow. "Buckle up" as we take a deep dive into past mistakes in urban design and how we can correct our mistakes.
