Crossing the Line

Abstract

Martin Luther King Jr. once said that Sunday morning is the most segregated time of the week. This seems rather ironic as Christians worldwide proclaim themselves brothers and sisters in Christ. What is the historical basis of this division, and how is it changing. Also, what happens when the "line" is crossed? This panel discussion will address the historical basis ofracial division in the church, as well as the churches' current movement toward racial reconciliation. The panel will be comprised of individuals with personal experience in either congregations identifying themselves as multicultural, or congregations where they are the minority. Panel members will discuss their personal experiences in "crossing the line;" including acceptance into the church body, how issues of race aided or hindered spiritual development, and the overall impact of a diverse congregation.
