Creating a Community of Diversity, Cooperation, Academic Achievement, and Student Persistence
- J. Herman Blake (Iowa State University)
Abstract
This session will feature a presentation and panel discussion of the Multicultural Leaming Community at Iowa State University. This program combines academic courses with common residence and co-curricular activities for a diverse group of freshmen. The coordination of student affairs units with housing units and academic units leads to a cohesive effort that helps students develop a sense of community and cooperation while focusing on academic achievement. Early evaluations show the program is achieving its academic goals through higher-grade levels and also higher levels of student persistence from the freshmen to sophomore year. The program is completing its third year of operation at Iowa State University.
