Fashion Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy: Development and Validation of a Domain-Specific Scale
Abstract
The purpose of this project is to conceptualize and operationalize fashion domain entrepreneurial self-efficacy (FDESE) by developing a valid measurement. This study started with reviewing the literature and individual interviews among 19 fashion entrepreneurs, which aided in the development of 72 initial items. An online survey was then conducted with individuals who are running or have the intention to run fashion businesses, yielding 249 usable samples for scale purification, which generated a 21-item scale consisting of four dimensions with six items loaded on Passion for Fashion Business, five items loaded on Financial Management, eight items loaded on Marketing and Branding, and four items loaded on Creativity. This study is the first attempt to develop practical scales measuring self-efficacy that focus on fashion domain-based entrepreneurship. When compared to existing scales that are used to measure entrepreneurial self-efficacy, the four dimensions identified in this study and the items contained in each dimension reflect the typical characteristics in the fashion industry and will be more suitable to fashion entrepreneurs needing to evaluate their potential of running successful fashion businesses.
