Academic Startups: Best Practices for Innovation and High Impact Student Experiences

Abstract

The authors developed the Elements of Academic Startups Taxonomy to illustrate the main practices and values used to establish the student operated facilities SPARKS, a café, and Innovate 1858, a lifestyle boutique. The values of innovation and high-impact student experiences guided each decision in developing both realistic retail learning laboratories in the Student Innovation Center at Iowa State University.
