Abstract

The lilac coat was inspired by the book The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion, in which she documents the grief she felt after the sudden loss of her husband. Two things are common to grief. First, it is sudden and creates disorder in the structure and order of life and second, it comes and goes in waves. To capture this we created the front of the coat using straight lines in the design which symbolizes life before grief. We made the back like a swing coat to get multiple folds like waves and in addition, we used 4 layers of crinkled black organza to give the illusion of waves.
