Flashy Flamingo: Girl’s Sun Protective Apparel With Sensory-Friendly Features

Abstract

Every sunburn a child received heightens their chances of skin cancer as an adult. CDC recommends children wear sun protective apparel to properly protect them. Yet, wearing apparel for a child with sensory disorders can be an agitating experience and even hinder their ability to play outside. Sensory sensitive children are impacted by fabric texture, seams, closures, and even garment pressure. This ensemble was designed to be more inclusive so girl’s, with or without sensory disorders, can have fashionable sun protection options – pant, skirt, and coordinating shirt. The ensemble addressed sensory disorders, psychological, and apparel-related barriers reported in childrenswear apparel research by improving fit and mobility through improved sizing standards and patternmaking. Comfort was addressed with various fabrics – SPF, aloe encapsulated, and soft mesh – along with the usage of Merrow ActiveSeam™ for flat-like seams. Every child should be able to play in the sun regardless of a disability.
