Celebration Cape #36: Tribal Dance in Raffia and Wool
- Robert Hillestad (University of Nebraska)
Abstract
The purpose of this project was to use wool yarn and raffia to bring about interrelationships between fiber and movement. The garment is part of a more encompassing collection of wearable art 'titled "The Dance of Fibers." Through the looping technique of hand-knitting, a garment structure with surface pile was created for placement over the shoulders. Then the garment length was extended by attaching streamers of raffia to the outer edges of the structure and wrapping them with pearl cotton thread to form tassels.
