Why Do Accidents Happen? A Content Analysis of Safety (CAP) Reports
Abstract
Nine years ago, the world’s biggest tragedy in clothing history happened in Bangladesh, the Rana Plaza building collapse, which took more than 1,100 workers' life and more than 2,600 were injured. After this catastrophic incident, Accord, a five-year agreement, was formed with the purpose of creating a safe working environment and a better life for the Bangladeshi workers (Accord, 2013). A content analysis approach was used to analyze the Corrective Action Plan (CAP) published in the remediation proceedings on the Accord website. A rigorous and transparent safety inspection of the structural, electrical, and fire safety is carried out by expert personnel under the supervision of the safety inspector, based on internationally recognized workplace safety standards. Fire safety issues were found to be the highest and closely followed by electrical safety issues. The result clearly indicates the safety issues prevalent in the Bangladesh RMG factories.
