Abstract

The purpose of this project was to design and develop a sustainable and comfortable dress that meets the needs of the Western working women. The objectives were 1. to develop a pattern that is easily manufactured in apparel mass production with simple sequence of operations, 2. to have minimum fallout, and 3. to utilize a natural fiber that has unique serviceability characteristics such as aesthetics, care, and comfort. The fabric was the source of inspiration as it set the mood for the dress design. Bhagalpur Chadar is a 100% single cocoon cruelty-free, Tussar silk hand loomed in Bhagalpur, the silk state of India. To minimize the fallout, a zero-waste approach was taken to develop the block. The entire fabric was used thus, determining the size and length of the dress. The result was a maxi length tunic dress that is office-friendly and suitable for leisure events.
