AI detection of how to manipulate selfies in Instagram: Comparing USA vs. South Korea

Abstract

Instagram users want to disseminate their filtered and photoshopped selfies, conforming to traditional standards of feminine beauty that prioritize youthfulness and thin appearance. The cohort exposed to altered selfies experienced lower self-perceived attractiveness compared to the cohort exposed to unaltered selfies, potentially resulting in a range of issues, including depression and eating disorders. The current research aims to identify and compare the actual manipulating behaviors in selfies between eastern and western cultures using advanced AI technologies such as picture identification. The results showed that South Koreans tend to retouch their selfies more than Americans, prioritizing the overall face shape and skin tones rather than focusing on individual facial features like the eyes, eyebrows, nose, and mouth. Researchers expected the results to provide a deeper understanding of how cultural factors influence the picture distortion behaviors exhibited by Instagram users.
