Abstract

Smartphone cases have become trendy personal statements. The aim of this study was to color forecast smartphone cases using Trickle Down Theory and Optimal Distinctiveness Theory to determine possible social-psychological meanings associated with selected trending smartphone case colors. A 2017 Spring forecast was determined using observational counting of smartphone case colors from a sample size of 559 men and women at a southeastern university in the fall of 2016. The most frequently observed smartphone case colors were black (30%) and blue (22%) compared to yellow (1%). Black and blue smartphone case colors were associated with individuals who may seek inclusion within their university community. The scarcity of yellow smartphone cases suggest individuals with this color may seek distinction from others. This study gives insight into how smartphone case colors can be used to determine an individual's social identity and consumer behavior preferences.
