A Foray into Zero-Waste Pattern-Making Procedure in Apparel Design – A Review
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to systematically review zero-waste pattern-making (ZWP) literature making the pattern drafting strategies and the processes of ZWP more transparent. Thirty-one papers were included in this report, and the eligibility criteria were: papers must (1) present original ZWP apparel design, (2) use the ZWP method to achieve zero-waste fashion, (3) address the ZWP development process, (4) be published in English, and (5) be peer-reviewed. The main themes of the ZWP development procedure are the iteration of two-dimensional patterns and three-dimensional forms, fitting techniques to close the gap, fabric consideration, and prototype design assessment. Designers communicated their ZWP development by sharing visuals. Being far from mainstream design and time consumption are the main ZWP design obstacles. The study provides practical and societal insights for designers and industry practitioners to better comprehend ZWP practice and support ZWP in the industry.
