Quilt Along with Me: Finding Communal Creativity "Inside the Block"
Abstract
This design explores the influence of community on the quiltmaking process within a virtual quilt along. It shows how communal activities contribute to the learning and creativity of quiltmakers to think "inside the block." The quilt was created during the National Quilt Museum's 2020 "Star Cluster" Quilt Along. The iterative design process was guided by bi-weekly instructions and enriched by communal interactions on Facebook, where participants shared progress and inspiration. The materials, including hand-dyed fabrics, reflect the designer's ability to find creativity within constraints. The final design showcases individual creativity within the collective framework. Insights from this experience reveal new avenues for collaborative creativity and the need to study the design process within communal contexts.
