Abstract

Purpose - Artificial intelligence (AI) is a new technology with great potential in educational contexts. Retailers use visual merchandising to enhance market visibility. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of using an image-generative AI (Dall-E 3) to create a visual display by applying design fundamentals, including the elements and principles of design.

Design - Dall-E 3 was selected for this study. It uses two different prompts generated by combining one of nine design elements and one of seven design principles to examine various genres of images for a visual display.

Findings - The prompts with more details resulted in images of greater complexity and clarity. Dall-E 3 successfully incorporates the requested design elements/principles. However, it struggles to prioritize prompt wording over design elements/principles.

Practical implications- AI image generators like Dall-E 3 can be introduced to students for design purposes, preparing them for the fashion industry's involvement in styles and technology.
