Abstract

The design examines the incorporation of Indigenous values into sustainable fashion design, focusing on the concepts of community and gratitude. By collaborating with Native American designers, a dress was crafted that tells a visual story of the community and incorporates traditional Indigenous techniques and symbols. The design process emphasized six core values identified in previous research with Indigenous apparel makers: Relationships, Connection to the land, Spirituality, Community, Sustainability, and Identity and healing. This initiative seeks to merge Indigenous wisdom with Western design principles to foster a more sustainable and respectful approach to fashion. The dress, made using a modern ribbon weaving technique and natural calico, reflects both cultural heritage and contemporary style, understanding the importance of community in Indigenous cultures. This approach not only produces a unique garment but also promotes a broader discourse on sustainability, cultural appreciation, and the role of fashion in maintaining traditional values.
