Abstract

Consumer disposal behavior has earned significant attention due to the throwaway culture and excessive garment consumption. Sustainable apparel disposal behavior (SADB) can mitigate environmental damage. Emotional intelligence (EI) influences decision-making, shopping, and general behavior, yet few studies address its impact on SADB. This study investigates the links between EI, environmental values, and consumers' intentions and attitudes towards SADB, considering gender and age within the cognition-affection-conation framework. An online survey collected data from a convenience sample of U.S. residents, both male and female, aged 19 and over, which were then analyzed using regression analysis. Results indicate that EI positively influences environmental values, which in turn enhance attitudes and intentions towards SADB. However, the relationship between attitudes and intentions towards SADB was not moderated by age and gender. These findings highlight the role of EI in promoting sustainable disposal practices, offering valuable insights for academics, retailers, and policymakers.
