Western Fashion Styles Inspired by Japanese Kimono

Abstract

The purpose of this project is to explore western fashion styles that are inspired by Japanese kimono including textile pattern design, motifs, and color selection, clothing silhouette, which depict as Japanese culture. In this project, the western fashion styles are collected from magazines, journals, TV, and websites that is mass communication world to analyze using the theory construction in design from Freidman (2003). Some objects are found in the 19th century (one full length ladies dress gown, university museum collection), and others are from the 20th century (e.g., one ladies suits-museum collection, men's robes entertainment TV show). Many others are also found in the 21st century (35 men's robes, more than 50 items of women's runway shows, films, and magazines). A qualitative analysis is used to compare these garment designs to analyze based on design motifs, color, silhouette, and custom components.
