Abstract

The snails of the genus Potamolithus are the most conspicuous among all the hydrobids of the southern Brazil- La Plata River area, and endemic to the Uruguay-Parana river system. Most of its known species were rapidly diagnosed by Pilsbry, first in 1896, and in 1911 the same author attempted a monograph of the genus for the corresponding volume of the Princeton Expedition to Patagonia. Pilsbry's work was one of exceptional difficulty on account of the inconstancy found in the features used for taxonomic differentiation.
