An Unexploted Resource: Doctoral Dissertations Dealing with Recent Mollusca
Abstract
Doctoral dissertations, with their painstaking production and abundant documentation, represent a significant proportion of the scientific research and writing carried out in our universities today. It is therefore distressing that so little use appears to be made of these studies, particularly when they are not published in toto, or even in part. Persons seeking literature references on various subjects often overlook or neglect these theses and the omission is especially unfortunate because the dissertations themselves generally contain exhaustive bibliographies. To call attention to these works, the following list has been compiled. It is restricted to theses on Recent (non-fossil) Mollusca, but in some cases where a dissertation dealt only partially with this subject an arbitrary decision for or against inclusion had to be made. These theses dealing with Mollusca only in their role as hosts of parasites (usually trematodea) were generally excluded.
