Who Were the Sowerbys?

Author

Abstract

One of the most loosely used of author's names for specific and gerneric names of mollusks, fossil and recent, is that of "Sowerby." The name is so indiscriminately applied to scientific taxa that a worker untrained in the literature of Mollusca may regard the name as referring to one individual. Many times the experienced taxonomists cannot without much labor distinguish which Sowerby should have credit for certain scientific names.
