Biography
As a former classroom teacher, teacher educator, researcher, and activist, Katy is interested in creating resources and spaces for educators to develop and apply a critical consciousness to their practices, school policies, and structures. Her work has focused primarily on racial and economic justice, particularly in educational contexts serving predominantly white and affluent students and in the disciplinary field of social studies. She is the author of Educating Activist Allies (Routledge, 2013), children’s books in the Amazing Iowa series, and articles in peer-reviewed and practitioner journals like Rethinking Schoolsand Teaching Tolerance. She is head of the Social & Cultural Studies area and the director of the Education for Social Justice graduate certificate in the School of Education at Iowa State University. She also co-manages the Critical Resources for Elementary Social Studies Teachers (CRESST) Facebook group. Katy has taught in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Virginia, and Maryland and is now based in her home state of Iowa.
