Abstract

This paper presents the design and implementation of Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) techniques for Bridge 1-438 on Blackbird Station Road over Blackbird Creek. The 50’-0” single span beam bridge acts as Delaware’s first all precast bridge and incorporates the nation’s second Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) overlay. It illustrates the pros, cons and lessons learned from using ABC techniques for the replacement of Bridge 1-438, with particular attention on UHPC. The paper will also discuss the collaborative efforts between federal and state agencies in producing specifications and plans.
